Applied Externships

Externs don’t just shadow professionals—they become part of the team.

Whether it’s troubleshooting in a lab, brainstorming marketing strategies, or supporting classroom learning, students gain hands-on experience that helps them see how their skills can translate into future careers. Along the way, they’re supported by mentors who guide, challenge, and inspire them to think bigger about what’s possible.

Project LEARN’s Applied Externships open the door for Lowell High School students to explore the world of work in a meaningful way. Each summer, students are matched with local businesses and organizations where they roll up their sleeves and take on real-world projects in fields like Engineering, Cybersecurity, Education, Communications, and Business/Entrepreneurship.

By the end of the program, students walk away with more than just experience. They build professional networks, confidence, and a clearer sense of direction for their futures. For many, it’s the first time they can picture themselves thriving in a professional setting—and the first step toward pursuing a career they’re passionate about.

Hear from our Students

I think communication and being able to understand and get feedback was something good that was learned. Working in a big group, everyone has different ideas, but in order for the group to work, you need to be honest and open to hearing new perspectives and ideas, even if you don’t like it. You also need to be confident in yourself, and that was learned.
I learned that I was a really good communicator with my teammates and was able to express my needs and concerns thoroughly, and in my networking! I felt I always had an issue or was scared to network, but this made me a lot more comfortable with how I network with people that I meet during the rest of my high school career.
I like engineering and that sort of process of research and design, and I think I could pursue it in the future. I think this externship solidified that. I also learned the importance of connections...I can build on this by making connections and making sure my future teams are comfortable with one another.
